Educational goals

The objective of this course is to introduce the student to the concepts and the analysis of continuous and dicrete time signals and systems, the principles that govern their functionality and their applications in telecommunications, electronics and control systems. By the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the basic concepts of continuous and discrete time signals and systems and identify their similarities and differences.
  • Explain the principles that govern linear and time invariant systems and calculate their response for a specific input.
  • Combine the proper mathematical tools (convolution, Fourier, Laplace and Z transforms) in the analysis of signals and systems in the time and frequency domain.
  • Apply the principes of sampling.
  • Explain the basic principles of filters and amplitude modulation of signals.
  • Calculate the zeros and poles of the transfer function of and assess the stability of a system.
  • Design simple systems that apply simple procedures to signals.
General Skills
  • Search, analysis and synthesis of information by using the appropriate means and technology.
  • Desicion making.
  • Independent and cooperative work.
  • Criticism and self-criticism ability.
  • Free, creative and inductive thinking.

Students evaluation

Α. Intermediate written examination (IΕ) (40%)
- Multiple choice questions.
- Questions with short answers.

Β. Final written examination (FΕ) (60%)
- Problem solving and calculations.
- Comparative evaluation of various systems/situations relative to wireless communications.

The final score of the course (FΕ*0,6+ IΕ*0,4) should be at least five (5). Moreover, FE and IE individual scores should be at least four (4).

The evaluation criteria are listed in the webpage of the course and are explained to the students in the classroom.
