Iosifidis (Iossifides) Athanasios B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.

  • Rank: Professor

Athanasios Iossifides (Iosifidis) is a Professor in the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering at the International Hellenic University (IHU). He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering and was awarded his Ph.D. in Engineering in 1994 and 2000, respectively, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece.

Dr. Iossifides’ career, before his full-time academic appointment, spanned a decade (1999–2010) at COSMOTE Mobile Communications S.A. He initially served as a telecommunications engineer and subsequently as the Coordinator of the Access and Transmission Network team (from 2004). In 2008, he was appointed Head of the North Greece Network Management Department. His industry tenure involved significant participation in internal technical development projects, focusing on optimizing the radio access network. He was also a member of the 3G and 3.5G vendor evaluation committee. Furthermore, he contributed to numerous internal process optimization initiatives, acting as a Coordinator for several. He co-organized and lectured at 7 technical seminars on 3G and 3.5G technologies, in collaboration with the Human Resources department.

His transition to academia commenced in February 2010, when he was elected and appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (ATEITH). He achieved tenure in this position in October 2013 and was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in October 2015. Following the restructuring of institutions, he joined the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering at IHU in May 2019, where he was advanced to the rank of Full Professor in October 2025. His teaching work includes courses in Telecommunications, Wireless Communications, Mobile Communications, Internet of Things (IoT), Signal Processing, Circuit Theory, and Technical Writing and Presentation in undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. He has served as a member of the Internal Evaluation Group (OMEA), the Curriculum Committee, the Doctoral Studies Committee, as well as other special committees of his Department, School, and University. From 2010 to 2017, he was responsible for the Erasmus program for his department and a member of the Institute’s Erasmus Coordinating Committee (ATEITH). From 2018 to 2020, he held the position of Director of the Advanced Electronic Systems research laboratory.

Dr. Iossifides has been a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 1994. From 2009 to 2012, he was a Liaison Officer, and from 2012 to 2018, he served as the Vice-Chair of the joint Greek Chapter of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) and Aerospace & Electronics Systems Society (AESS). His editorial service includes being a member of the editorial board for Wiley Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies (2013–2018), for which he received recognition as one of the best editors for the 2016–2017 period, and IEEE Communications Letters (2015–2018). He has also contributed to the academic community through his involvement in organizing committees of seven international conferences and the technical program committees of over 40 conferences.

Dr. Iossifides has participated in 12 research/development programs on wireless and mobile communications, IoT, and STEM education. These areas form the core of his research interests. A key project among them involved the coordination of measurements and evaluation studies for the 2G and 3G networks of MTN Cyprus. His current research trajectory is concentrating on radio resource and access management for wireless networks (e.g., IEEE 802.11) and mobile communications (4G/5G/6G), reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques, and lately the field of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). His publication record includes more than 55 papers in journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He co-edited the translation of an international publisher’s book on Wireless Communications, Networks, and Systems. He has presented (with collaborators) two tutorials at international conferences, has delivered invited lectures on many occasions, and was honored with the Best Paper Award at the ISCC 2011 conference.
