General

Educational goals

The purpose of the course is the student to understand the particularities of electronic power circuits, the functional behavior of ideal and real semiconductor switches, and the principle of operation of power circuits with alternating current input. The specific objectives of the course are that the student can:

  • Remember, reproduce, analyze, and apply knowledge from DC circuits and AC circuits lessons.
  • Recognize and demonstrate the particularities of power converters.
  • Evaluate, compare and select the most suitable power switch for each application.
  • Recognize, describe, and interpret the operation of power converters.
  • Evaluate and select the most appropriate power circuit, depending on the application.

  • Search, analyze and synthesize data and information, using the necessary technologies.

  • Principle of operation of power circuits.
  • Ideal power switches.
  • Semiconductor power switches.
  • Single – phase rectifiers.
  • Multi – phase rectifiers.
  • Applications of rectifiers with diodes and SCRs.
  • Single – phase cycloconverters.
  • Single and multi phase ac voltage regulators.

Written final examination, which is in the form of problem solving with distinct difficulty and the free use of any help.

The grade on the written final examination must be at least five (5.0).
