Educational goals

The aim of the course is the student to understand and interpret the basic concepts of biomedical signals analysis and process from various devices, so that can collaborate effectively on the subject of medical technology with skills required in a real-world environment. Specific objectives of the course are that the student can:

  • Remember, recognize and use basic knowledge of electronics and measurements in analyzing medical instruments and devices.
  • Describe and interpret the principle of operation of the main medical devices.
  • Recognize and evaluate the specific features of medical equipment, about the acquisition and processing of measured bio-signals.
  • Distinguish and solve problems related to the effect of noise and electromagnetic interference.

● Introduction to biomedical instruments and measurements.
●  Electrodes and sensors.
●  Bio-electric amplifiers, signals and noise.
●  Electrocardiograms.
● The human respiratory system and its measurement.
● The human nervous system and instruments for measuring brain function.
●  Medical ultrasound scans.
●  Radiology and nuclear medicine.
●  Electromagnetic interference in medical electronic equipment.
●  Medical bioinformatics – Auto diagnosis and Technologies.
●  Maintenance of medical equipment.

Students evaluation

Student assessment is done by preparing and presenting a project. The project deals with broader issues of medical devices and is undertaken individually or by groups of two students. The work is delivered in a word file of at least 20 pages, divided into chapters, including abstract, contents and bibliography. The presentation is made up of software, consisting of at least 15 slides and lasting 12 to 15 minutes, followed by questions. The presence of all students is mandatory during the presentations.

The evaluation criteria are notified to the students through the course web page and also during the lectures.
